A brand-new synthetic opioid with a structure resembling that of the controlled synthetic opioid etonitazene is protonitazene. In forensic casework, heroin and fentanyl, two synthetic opioids with a distinct structure from protonitazene, are encountered.
Both pills and powder versions of this drug are available. It has also been discovered in syringes, proving that it may be found in all the common opioid dosage forms.
Researchers think this drug is three times more powerful than fentanyl after further investigation.
Protonitazene Production
This drug is a 5-nitro-2-benzylbenzimidazole that was created in the late 1950s as an opioid analgesic. It is a member of the series of 2-benzylbenzimidazole compounds (10).
The C4 position of the benzyl moiety is substituted by a methoxy or an ethoxy group, respectively, making it a metonitazene and etonitazene homologue.
The substitution of the benzyl moiety at the C4 position with an n-propoxy or an isopropoxy group, respectively, makes this drug an isomer of isotonitazene.
